  • Another Busy Week in Year 2!

    Published 06/11/26, by Sam Wilcox

It has been another busy and exciting week in Year 2, with plenty of maths challenges, a journey back in time and even the first sounds of Christmas creeping into our classroom!

    Maths

In Maths, we have been working hard on adding numbers and crossing the tens barrier. We have been thinking about our best friend in maths – the number 10!

The children have been learning how to bridge to ten, using what they know about number bonds to make trickier calculations easier. We have been using practical resources, drawing pictures and explaining our thinking. It has been lovely watching the children begin to make connections and discover that sometimes a tricky sum becomes much easier when we find our way to ten first!

    English and History

In English, we have started our new book, which follows the adventures of a little mouse aboard the Titanic.

This has led us on a fascinating journey of discovery in both English and History. We have been exploring what the Titanic was like, what life was like in 1912 and what it might have felt like to be a passenger on such an enormous and impressive ship.

The children have been asking some brilliant questions and using their imaginations to put themselves in the shoes of the people who travelled aboard the Titanic. There has certainly been plenty of excitement and curiosity in the classroom!

    Nativity

Believe it or not, Nativity rehearsals have officially begun!

The children have been given their lines to learn and songs to practise, and we are already working hard to get everything ready for our Christmas performance. There is lots to remember, but the children are approaching it with enthusiasm. We are looking forward to putting it all together over the coming weeks!

🧡 This Week in Year 2 – We've Caught the Stitching Bug!

What a week it has been in Year 2!

I would love to tell you that we have spent hours and hours on Maths, English and Science this week. However, I have to admit that we have all been infected by the stitching bug!

Our classroom has been transformed into a little sewing workshop. We have spent the week threading needles, learning running stitches, cutting fabric and, perhaps most importantly, learning how to cope when things don't quite go to plan!

There have been tangled threads, wonky stitches, plenty of frustration and the occasional cry of "I've done it!" Our eyes are tired from concentrating so closely, and our fingers are a little sore from the occasional encounter with a needle!

But what has impressed me most is the children's perseverance. Sewing is not easy, especially when you are seven, but the children have shown real determination to keep trying, even when things have gone wrong.

Our hand puppets are coming along wonderfully, and I cannot wait to see the finished creations!

    Photos to come!

English – How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth

This week, we introduced our new book, How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth.

It is a wonderfully funny book, and we will be using it to explore instruction writing. Over the coming weeks, we will be thinking carefully about how to give clear instructions, put things in the correct order and use language that tells someone exactly what to do.

After all, washing a woolly mammoth is no easy task!

Maths – Making Friends with 10!

In Maths, we have been exploring how to add three one-digit numbers, using one of our very best friends in Maths – the number 10!

We have been looking for pairs of numbers that make 10 before adding the remaining number. This helps us turn a tricky calculation into something much more manageable.

We have also been playing a brilliant mathematical game called Totality, which encourages the children to think strategically and practise their number skills.

If you would like to have a go at home, you can find the game here:

    https://nrich.maths.org/problems/totality

It is a fantastic game to play together, and you might be surprised by how much mathematical thinking is involved!

    Parents' Evening

A big thank you to all the parents and carers who came to see me at parents' evening.

It was lovely to have the opportunity to talk about your children's progress, celebrate their achievements and discuss how we can continue to support them.

Working together makes such a difference to our young people, and I really appreciate your time, support and encouragement.

    🌟 This Week in Year 2 🌟

Another busy and creative week in Year 2! We have been finishing our stories, exploring some wonderful illustrations and even beginning an exciting new Design and Technology project.

    🦊 English and Guided Reading

This week, we have been putting the finishing touches to our stories inspired by Follow Me, Little Fox.

The children have really let their imaginations run wild! Some stories have featured the Gruffalo, while others have been almost as long as The Lord of the Rings! There have been some wonderfully creative ideas, and although writing a whole story is no easy task, every child has worked incredibly hard and should be proud of their efforts.

In Guided Reading, we have been exploring Hansel and Gretel, illustrated by Anthony Browne. His unusual and detailed illustrations have certainly captured the children's attention! It has been wonderful watching their reactions as they spotted hidden details and began asking questions about the pictures.

    πŸ”’ Maths

In Maths, we have been exploring what happens when we add 1 to different numbers, building our confidence with addition and recognising how numbers change.

We have also continued our daily practice of number bonds to 100 and fact families. These are important skills that we will keep revisiting throughout the year to help build fluency and confidence.

Any opportunities to practise these at home would be greatly appreciated!

    🧍 Science

In Science, we have been thinking about what makes us human.

We explored the similarities and differences between humans and fish, thinking about what we have in common as living creatures and what makes us different.

It was fascinating to hear the children's ideas as they compared how we move, breathe and survive in our different environments.

    🐻‍❄️ Geography

This week, we tackled a rather interesting question:

Why are there no polar bears in Antarctica?

The children used their growing geographical knowledge to think about where polar bears live and why they might not be found at the South Pole.

We decided that the journey from the Arctic to Antarctica would be incredibly long and that travelling through much warmer parts of the world would make it very difficult for polar bears to get there.

It was lovely to see the children using what they have learnt about different climates and habitats to explain their thinking.

    🧡 Design and Technology

We have started our exciting new DT project – making animal puppets!

The children will be designing and creating their own puppets to accompany the Little Fox stories they have written in English.

We are looking forward to seeing their characters come to life and exploring how we can turn our designs into real puppets!

    🌟 This Week in Year 2 🌟

We have had another busy and creative week in Year 2! The children have been working incredibly hard, particularly with their writing, and it has been wonderful to see their confidence growing.

    🦊 English

This week, we have been slowly and carefully writing our own stories, inspired by Follow Me, Little Fox.

Rather than rushing to finish, we have been really focusing on what makes a good sentence. The children have been writing each sentence on an individual strip of paper, allowing them to think carefully about capital letters, finger spaces, punctuation and whether their sentences make sense.

It has been lovely to see the children taking such care with their writing and beginning to see themselves as authors!

    πŸ”’ Maths

In Maths, we have finished our topic on place value and have now moved on to addition and subtraction.

This week, we have been exploring fact families using numbers up to 20. We have been learning how addition and subtraction are connected and how we can use the same three numbers to create different number sentences.

This has been a little tricky, so any extra practice at home would be really beneficial. For example, using the numbers 3, 5 and 8, can your child make four number sentences?

    3 + 5 = 8

    5 + 3 = 8

    8 − 3 = 5

    8 − 5 = 3

    🦎 Science

In Science, we have been learning all about reptiles and discovering what makes these fascinating creatures so unique.

We explored their different features and thought carefully about what reptiles need to survive. The children then put their knowledge to the test by thinking about how they would design a suitable reptile house. They had to consider what would make a safe and comfortable habitat for their chosen reptile.

✍️ BBC 500 Words Writing Competition

There is a fantastic writing opportunity open to all children: the BBC 500 Words Competition!

If your child has enjoyed creating stories in class, this could be a wonderful chance for them to let their imagination run wild and write a story of their very own.

You can find out more here:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/joinin/bp-500-words-competition

    πŸŽ„ Christmas Card Designs

You will also notice that the children are bringing home their Christmas card designs!

They have been busy creating their artwork, and we would love for you to have the opportunity to turn their designs into something special for Christmas.

Please make sure you return or submit your orders as soon as possible so that everything can be processed in plenty of time for Christmas.

    🌟 This Week in Year 2 🌟

We have had another fantastic week in Year 2, with lots of practical learning, creativity and brilliant ideas!

    🐟 Science

This week in Science, we have been learning all about fish. We even had a real fish to examine! We looked closely at it to identify the features that make it a fish and discussed how these help it to survive underwater.

The children then became scientists themselves, creating careful scientific drawings and labelling the different parts of the fish. They were fascinated by being able to see everything we had been learning about up close!

    πŸͺ Geography

In Geography, our journey took us from the freezing conditions of Antarctica to the heat of the Sahara Desert. We located the Sahara on a world map before focusing on one of its most famous inhabitants – the camel.

We explored how camels, just like penguins, have special adaptations that help them survive in their harsh habitats. The children were brilliant at spotting the similarities and differences between surviving somewhere extremely hot and somewhere extremely cold!

    🦊 English

In English, we have started thinking about our own sequel to Follow Me, Little Fox. The children created a brand-new character who could join Little Fox on his next adventure.

Year 2 absolutely loved creating their characters and came up with some wonderful ideas and narratives. We will now use these fantastic characters to help us plan our own stories.

    πŸ”’ Maths

In Maths, we have been practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Although we are already getting very good at these, it is important that we keep practising so that we can recall them quickly and confidently.

This is a great one to practise at home too – perhaps try counting in 2s, 5s or 10s while walking, climbing the stairs or even in the car!

    This Week in Year 2

We have had another busy and exciting week in Year 2, with lots of fantastic learning both inside and outside the classroom!

    English

This week, we wrote postcards to Little Fox’s Dad. Year 2 were incredible at remembering their punctuation and did a brilliant job of explaining how Little Fox was feeling. We were really impressed with the detail and care they put into their writing.

    Maths

In Maths, we have started looking at the symbols for greater than (>), less than (<) and equal to (=). The children might know these as my “crocodile friends” – remembering that the hungry crocodile always wants to eat the greater number!

    Science

Our Science learning this week has been all about amphibians. We headed outside and built our own frog and toad houses in the hope that we might persuade one to move in! Before building, the children had to think carefully about what a frog or toad would need to survive and then use this knowledge to create a suitable habitat. We will be keeping a close eye on them to see if we get any visitors!

     Geography

In Geography, we explored the different features of a penguin that help it survive in the freezing conditions of Antarctica. The children then used what they had learnt to design their own Antarctic creature, thinking carefully about the adaptations it would need to survive such harsh conditions. There were some wonderfully imaginative creations!

A Wonderful, Creative Week in Year 2!

Please take a look at the photos of all the wonderful creative work we have been doing this week!

In Maths, we have been getting used to using Cuisenaire rods. Before using them for our maths learning, the children needed some time to explore and play with this new resource. Their challenge was to use the rods to create a crocodile! The results were so imaginative and creative that I had to take some photos to share with you.

In English, we have been focusing on questions and learning how to ask and write them correctly. We now know that a good question needs a question word and a question mark (?) at the end. The children have enjoyed coming up with their own questions and putting their new skills into practice.

In Science, our focus this week was birds. We went on a bird-spotting walk and managed to identify four different types of birds. Back in the classroom, we thought about why birds have different shaped beaks. We used clothes pegs, spoons and tweezers to mimic different bird beaks and took part in a pick-up challenge to see which worked best for different objects. We concluded that birds have different beaks because their beaks are suited to different jobs and different types of food.

In geography, we created homes to survive in Antarctica to help our penguin, Pip survive. You can see from the range of resources and the creativity that Pip would possibly survive!

All in all, it has been a wonderful, creative and hands-on week in Year 2. It has been lovely to see the children exploring, experimenting and enjoying their learning. Have a look through the photos to see some of their fantastic work!
