Year R

We’ve had another amazing week in Badger Class!
We kicked off the week by designing and making our Christmas cards — yes, it’s that time of year already! These cards will soon be available for you to purchase, and we’re sure you’ll love them just as much as we do.
In Maths, our focus has been on the numbers 1, 2 and 3. We’ve been subitising (recognising quantities without counting), learning how to represent these numbers in different ways, and spotting them in our environment. To apply this learning in a fun and practical way, we’ve been playing games like Snakes and Ladders, Race to Space, and Dominoes — all of which have helped reinforce counting, turn-taking and number recognition.
Over in our Forest School area, we continued exploring numbers by hunting for natural number cards hidden in the outdoor space. The children then matched each number to a filled ten frame using materials they found around them — including conkers, sticks, leaves and stones. This was a brilliant opportunity to bring our maths learning into nature, and it was lovely to see the children working collaboratively and thinking carefully about their number choices.
In Phonics, we’ve continued to make excellent progress. The children are growing in confidence when identifying sounds, blending them to read simple words, and beginning to write some of the sounds they know. Keep up the great reading practice at home — it really makes a difference!
PE was another exciting session this week. We focused on moving safely around the hall and exploring different ways of travelling. The children had to manoeuvre their way around obstacle courses, practising balance, coordination and spatial awareness. They especially enjoyed the challenge of finishing each course by aiming and throwing a beanbag into a hoop — great fun and brilliant skill-building!
In RE, we began learning about what is important to Christians. We explored this idea through stories, discussions, and creative activities. The children worked in small groups to build models of St Saviour’s using construction materials and coloured in pictures of churches. It was wonderful to see them so engaged and respectful when learning about different beliefs.
Our Library Day was, as always, a popular part of the week. A gentle reminder that Library Day is every Thursday, and we kindly ask that children return their borrowed books each week so they can choose a new one to enjoy.
Forest School was a real highlight once again. This week, the children enjoyed creating snails out of clay and conkers, as well as designing imaginative leaf people. They continue to show so much curiosity and creativity in the outdoor environment — and plenty of muddy fun in the mud kitchen too!

Tricky Word Pots: Please could your child bring in a labelled pot by Monday. This will be used to store tricky word cards that we will send home to support reading practice. The pot can be any small container — a yoghurt pot or small tub would be perfect!

Phonics: Don’t forget that you can continue to support reading at home through the Collins eBooks, available at: https://www.collinshub.co.uk/login/
And through the Little Wandle phonics parent resources here: https://www.littlewandle.org.uk/resources/for-parents/
Thank you, as always, for your continued support. The children have had such a positive and fun-filled week — we are so proud of the progress they are making. We hope you all have a restful and happy weekend.
