We Enjoy and Excel in the Presence of God

Year R

Friday 2nd October 2026

Another fantastic week in Badgers Class! The children have continued to work incredibly hard, and it has been wonderful to see the progress they are making, particularly in their Phonics learning. They are becoming more confident with our routines and are really enjoying getting stuck into their learning.

In Phonics, we have made some great progress this week as we have continued learning new sounds. The children have been working hard to recognise and practise the sounds we have introduced and are beginning to use them when having a go at reading and writing. We are so pleased with how well they are doing!

We will be holding a Phonics Evening on Wednesday 14th October, from 6:00–7:00pm. This will be a great opportunity to find out more about how we teach Phonics in school and, most importantly, how you can support your child with their Phonics learning at home. If you would like to learn more, please do come along — we would love to see you there!

In Drawing Club, we explored the wonderful story Little Red Riding Hood. The children really enjoyed talking about the characters and events in the story and produced some lovely drawings. They also had a go at writing, and it has been fantastic to see their confidence growing as they begin to use the sounds they have been learning in Phonics.

We have also been continuing to develop our pencil grip and early handwriting skills. The children have been practising holding their pencils correctly and have started having a go at forming letters. These are important skills that take lots of practice, so we are very proud of the effort they are putting in!

This week we had our first Music lesson, which was lots of fun! The children had the opportunity to explore music and movement using our shaky eggs. They enjoyed moving and shaking them in time with different types of music and listening carefully to changes in the music.

We also had a lovely time at our Harvest Festival. The children enjoyed being part of the celebration, and we would like to say a huge thank you for all of your generous donations. Your support is very much appreciated.

As part of our learning about families and growing, we looked at some baby photographs of the children. The children had lots of fun trying to guess who was who! We then talked about what has changed since they were babies and how they have grown and developed. It was lovely to hear their ideas and listen to them talk about themselves and their families.

Tricky Words

This week I have given each child a Tricky Word Pot. Please could these come into school every day, as we will be adding new words to them and practising them regularly with the children.

Tricky words are words that we learn to recognise by sight because they cannot always be sounded out using the phonics sounds we have learned so far. Learning to recognise these words quickly will help the children become more confident and fluent readers.

Please spend a little time practising the words in your child's pot at home too. Even a few minutes each day can make a big difference!
