We Enjoy and Excel in the Presence of God

Year R

Friday 9th October 2026

Another fantastic week in Badgers Class! The children have continued to work incredibly hard, and it has been lovely to see their confidence growing as they settle further into our routines and enjoy all the different activities we have been doing.

In Phonics, we have continued working hard on recognising and practising our sounds. The children are becoming increasingly confident in using their phonics knowledge when reading and writing, and it is wonderful to see the progress they are making. Please continue to practise sounds and tricky words at home whenever you can, as this really does make a difference!

In Drawing Club, we explored the adventures of Captain Pugwash! The children really enjoyed talking about pirates, treasure and exciting adventures at sea. They then had the opportunity to draw their very own treasure islands, using their imaginations to think about what they might find there. We had some fantastic ideas and lovely drawings! The children also continued to develop their early writing skills, having a go at using the sounds they have learned in Phonics.

In Maths, we have been busy exploring mass, capacity and simple patterns. The children enjoyed taking part in lots of fun, practical activities to compare objects and explore which were heavier or lighter, as well as looking at how much different containers could hold. We also had fun recognising, copying and continuing simple patterns. It has been great to see the children learning through hands-on activities and beginning to use mathematical language to explain their thinking.

We have also been getting a little bit festive this week as the children have been busy making their Christmas cards! Hopefully these have all made their way home safely. I can't quite believe we are thinking about Christmas already! The children really enjoyed creating their cards.

Tricky Word Pots

Please could you make sure your child's Tricky Word Pot comes into school every day. We will continue adding new words to the pots and practising them regularly with the children.

Please also spend a little time practising these words at home. Just a few minutes each day can really help build confidence and support the children's reading development.

📌 Notices

  • Reading Books and Journals: Please continue to bring these into school every day. We encourage you to read with your child as regularly as possible and record this in their reading journal.
  • Tricky Word Pots: Please bring these into school every day so that we can add to them and practise the words together.
  • Collins Hub eBooks: The label inside the front of your child's reading book contains their individual login details. These allow you to access the books that the children read three times a week in school. These books are carefully matched to the phonics sounds the children have learned, so they should be able to read them using their phonics knowledge. Please encourage your child to have a go at reading these books independently, supporting them when needed.
  • Phonics Evening: Wednesday 14th October, 6:00–7:00pm. We would love to see you there! This will be a great opportunity to find out more about how we teach Phonics and how you can support your child at home.

Have a lovely weekend!
