We Enjoy and Excel in the Presence of God

Year 1 - 6th June 2025

Good afternoon and welcome back!

How is it Summer 2 already, the year is flying by. It has been wonderful hearing all about the children’s half-term activities – it sounds like they all had a fantastic time!

This Week’s Highlights

Maths
This week in Maths, we’ve been focusing on sharing and halving numbers and shapes. We’ve been talking about the importance of everything being equal and fair – great mathematical thinking and an important concept for teamwork and problem-solving.

Phonics
Our phonics focus has included the following sounds:

  • /ai/: eigh, aigh, ey, ea (e.g., eight, straight, grey, break)
  • /n/: kn, gn (e.g., knee, gnaw)
  • /m/: mb (e.g., thumb)
  • /ear/: ere, eer (e.g., here, deer)

Our new tricky words are: busy, beautiful, pretty, and hour.

When reading at home, please encourage your child to spot these digraphs in words and to break down any unfamiliar words. For extra practise, this website offers helpful games and activities focused on Phase 5 sounds: https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources

English
In English, we read The Pirate Cruncher. The children made predictions, created their own sea monsters, and wrote questions to Captain Purplebeard. To their delight, he even paid Year 1 a visit – which caused lots of laughter and excitement!

Computing
This week in Computing, the Owls were very curious and enthusiastic as they learned about programming. We practised logging in and then explored how to use basic code together. Many children expressed interest in continuing at home – you can access the same platform here: https://codejr.org/scratchjr/index.html

We hope you have a lovely weekend and we look forward to another fun-filled week ahead.

Best wishes,
The Year 1 Team
