Year 1 - 4th July 2025

Another fun and busy week in Owls.
We have begun our final English text of the year: The Great Fire of London. Building on our prior historical learning, we discussed what we already know about this significant event. The children created detailed illustrations, labelled and wrote about them, posed thoughtful questions about Samuel Pepys, and sequenced the main events of the fire. There has been some super writing, and we are really proud of their effort and creativity!
Next week, we will be creating our own newspaper reports. To help prepare, children might like to explore the features of newspapers at home and find out more facts about the Great Fire of London to share in class on Monday.
In Maths, we’ve started our new unit on place value to 100. This week, we have been counting in tens to 100, partitioning numbers into tens and ones, and working with missing numbers on number lines. Children are becoming increasingly confident with these bigger numbers!
In Jigsaw (PSHE), our focus on change has continued. We’ve been thinking about how we’ve changed since we were babies, what we can do now that we couldn’t do before, and how change can sometimes feel challenging. We’ve talked about the importance of showing resilience, perseverance, and resourcefulness.
In History , we had a fun and engaging time pretending to be reporters interviewing Samuel Pepys! The children loved taking part in the drama and stepping into the role of a journalist.
Reminders:
- As we approach the end of term, please send in a strong, named carrier bag so your child can take their books and work home.
- You are warmly invited to come in and see your child’s final DT project on Thursday 17th July at 2:30pm. We look forward to welcoming you!
Wishing you all a lovely weekend,
The Year 1 Team
