Good afternoon,
It’s been another action-packed week in Year 1, and the children have had lots of fun while learning new things.
We kicked off the week by celebrating Odd Socks Day, a wonderful opportunity to embrace and celebrate the fact that we are all unique. It was fantastic to see so many different socks, and the children really enjoyed the activity!
On Wednesday, the children took part in an exciting Interfaith Morning where they mixed with other classes across the school. The focus was on Buddhism, and the children participated in creative activities that helped them explore this faith in a fun and engaging way. It was a great chance to learn about different cultures and beliefs!
In phonics, we’ve introduced a few new sounds this week: /oa/ as in go /igh/ as in tiger /ai/ as in paper /ee/ as in he. Our tricky word focus has been on: Mr, Mrs, Ms, and ask. We are also continuing to practice previously learned tricky words through games, book spotting, and spelling practice. Encouraging your child to recognise and spell these words from memory is really helpful!
In English, we’ve been learning all about penguins through the story Lost and Found. Using non-fiction books, the children researched penguins and then described their appearance and feelings. It’s been a wonderful way to link reading and writing with a real-world topic.
In Maths, we have been focusing on addition. The children have been learning how to add more, using a 10-frame to support their understanding. We've been solving addition problems together and working on remembering number bonds to 10. For extra practice at home, I’ve set some questions on Edshed, and there are addition problems attached at the bottom of the blog. Do as many or as little as you feel fit.
In Science, we continue to observe the changes in the seasons. The children have been discussing how the weather and nature change as we move through autumn, and we’ll keep an eye on how this evolves.
Our focus in R.E. this week has been on angels. We’ve been discussing where angels are seen in different religions and how they might be important figures, especially in Christianity.
Finally, a gentle reminder to please leave keyrings and cuddly toys at home. We’ve had a few of these items brought in, and they often get lost or cause distractions during the day. Your support with this is much appreciated!
Thank you all for your continued support – we are looking forward to another fun-filled week of learning next week!
Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs. Platt
