21.11.25- Year 1

Good afternoon ,
What a busy and exciting week it’s been for Year 1! As we count down to the big day, the children have been working hard on their nativity performance. There’s not long to go now, and we can feel the excitement building! Please remember to send in costumes by Thursday, 27th November, and be sure to label everything in a named bag.
Tennis Fun! A highlight of the week was our tennis session! The children had a fantastic time learning new skills, and they did a great job following instructions. It's always wonderful to see them so engaged and eager to improve. Our next tennis session will be on Friday 12th December!
In English, we’ve been diving into the beautiful story Lost and Found. The children have been exploring the emotions of the boy in the story, as well as comparing and contrasting the boy’s feelings with those of the penguin. We also focused on sequencing parts of the story, and the children practised their sentence writing. They’ve done a brilliant job remembering the important steps of writing—thinking about their sentences, orally rehearsing before writing, and making sure to use capital letters, finger spaces, and full stops. Keep it up, Year 1! 😊
This week in Phonics, we’ve been practising the following sounds: /ai/ as in shake (a-e) /igh/ as in time (i-e) /oa/ as in home (o-e) /oo/ and /yoo/ as in rude and cute (u-e) We’ve also been learning some tricky words: could, would, should, our.
In Maths, we’ve been working on the part-part-whole method for subtraction. The children have been challenged to find a missing part when subtracting, and while this has been tricky for some, they’ve been putting in a lot of effort. To help with further practice, I’ve set some home learning tasks on Edshed, which I’ve also attached to this blog post for your convenience.
In Science we have been recording the weather. On Monday, with Mrs Kitcher the children will record Saturday and Sunday’s weather from this weekend. In readiness for recording, please talk to your child about the weather and what they might wear or need.
Finally, with the colder weather this week, please ensure your child has a named coat in school. It’s important that they stay warm during outdoor playtimes and activities.
It’s been a busy and productive week in Year 1, and I’m so proud of all the hard work the children have been putting in.
Have a wonderful weekend, and please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
