We Enjoy and Excel in the Presence of God

Friday 9th January 2026 – Year 1

Welcome Back!

We hope you had a wonderful Christmas break and wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year. It's been a joy welcoming the children back to school, and we’ve loved hearing all about their adventures over the holidays. It’s clear that everyone had a fantastic time!

To kick off our first week back, we started with  'Holiday News', and it was fantastic to see how enthusiastic the children were as they shared their stories. They’ve definitely returned full of energy and excitement!

This week, we’ve also introduced our new text, The Squirrels Who Squabbled. We began exploring the characters Bruce and Cyril, discussing how they might be feeling throughout the story. The children really enjoyed talking about the emotions of the characters and making predictions about what might happen next.

In Maths, we’ve started learning about place value to 20, focusing on the terms tens and ones. We will continue building on this next week, and to support their learning at home, I’ve set some EdShed homework. Please do encourage your child to complete this at their own pace.

In Phonics, we have been working on the following sounds: /ee/ as in funny, /e/ as in head, /w/ as in wheel, /oa/ as in toe, /sh/ as in shoulder

We’ve also introduced a few new tricky words: any, many, and again. Please encourage your child to look out for these words when reading their books. I’ve set their eBooks for the week, which should be a great way for them to practice these new skills.

Lastly, I’d like to remind everyone that there have been a number of children bringing toys to school. While we understand how important these toys can be, we kindly ask that they are kept at home to avoid the risk of them getting lost or damaged during the school day. Thank you for your understanding and support with this.

We’re looking forward to another exciting term of learning, and we can’t wait to see all the progress the children will continue to make. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
