We Enjoy and Excel in the Presence of God

16.01.26 - Year 1

We've had yet another busy and productive week in Year 1! Here's a quick update on what we've been working on.

This week in English, we've been exploring suffixes and how they can change the meaning or tense of words. We’ve been focusing on the suffixes -ed and -ing, learning how they can transform a word, like turning "jump" into "jumped" or "jumping." We’ve also been delving into adjectives, aiming to make our writing more exciting. The children especially enjoyed describing squirrels!

In Maths, we've been focusing on numbers to 20 and understanding tens and ones. Using Numicon, the children have been building and representing these numbers in different ways. To help reinforce this learning at home, I’ve set some activities on Edshed. Please encourage your child to complete these tasks!

In Phonics, we have worked on the following sounds:

  • /igh/ as in fly (y) , /oa/ as in snow (ow),  /j/ as in giant (g) , /f/ as in phone (ph)

We've also been practising tricky words like who, whole, where, and two. I’ve just assigned your child’s new reading ebook on eCollins. Please make some time to read together—your support at home really helps strengthen their phonics skills!

On a more serious note, I’d like to mention that for the second week in a row, the children have collectively missed some minutes of their playtime or Golden Time. The main challenge has been staying focused and ready to learn. Some children are finding it hard to stop chatting when it’s time to listen and work. I’ve been reminding them regularly about the importance of actively listening during lessons and making the right choices.

It’s also important that they focus on making the right choice for themselves—without worrying about what others are doing. When each child is focused on their own actions and doing their best work, we create a much calmer, more productive environment for everyone. I’ve already had conversations with the class about how they do their best work when the classroom is calm and respectful. Could you please help by talking to your child about the importance of staying focused and making good choices, regardless of what others may be doing around them. I’m confident that with your support, we’ll see a big improvement next week!

Thank you for your continued support. Have a great weekend.
