19.03.26 - Year 1

How lovely it has been to see the sunshine this week! It has certainly lifted everyone’s spirits.
One of our highlights has been looking after our school environment by taking part in a litter pick. It was wonderful to see how well the children worked together as a team, and they were amazed at just how much litter they collected. We were very proud of their teamwork and sense of responsibility.
We have also completed our Difference course with Mel. This has supported the children in thinking carefully about how to treat others, understanding different viewpoints, and showing respect to one another.
We continue to practise our Easter songs, with a firm favourite being “Spring Chicken.” We are looking forward to seeing many of you at the church next week, where the children will be performing alongside Year R.
In Phonics, we have been learning:
- /ur/ as in ear (learn) /r/ as in wr (wrist) /s/ as in st and sc (whistle, science)
- Schwa sound at the end of words (e.g. actor)
We have also been recapping all the tricky words we have learnt so far. Little Wandle ebooks have been set.
In English, we have been planning and writing our own stories based on “Dear Zoo.” The children came up with some fantastic adjectives, enjoyed using repeated refrains, and worked hard to write clearly constructed sentences with finger spaces, capital letters, and full stops. They should feel very proud of their creative ideas and efforts.
In Maths, we have been exploring fact families using part-part-whole models and finding missing numbers. The children have found this quite challenging, so I have set some additional practice on EdShed and included attachments for support. Please use as you wish.
In History, we continue our learning about space. The children have really enjoyed exploring non-fiction books and discovering new and interesting facts.
In RE next week, we will begin learning about Easter, focusing on why it is important to Christians and what they believe happened.
We hope you all have a lovely weekend.
