We Enjoy and Excel in the Presence of God

23rd April 2026- Year 1

Good evening,

We’ve had another wonderful and busy week in Year 1!

The children have been practising sports day games in preparation for the big event. There has been lots of enthusiasm, teamwork, and excitement as everyone gets ready.

In Science, we were lucky enough to enjoy the sunny weather while exploring the school grounds. We went on a hunt for wild and garden flowers on the field and in the sensory garden. The children discovered daisies, buttercups, bluebells, and dandelions on the field. In the sensory garden, we found lavender, rosemary, and buddleia. It was great fun and a fantastic way to learn outdoors.

In Art with Mrs Kitcher, the children had a great time creating beautiful seascapes using watercolours. We were very impressed with their creativity and use of colour.

In English, we have continued reading our class text The Boy Who Sailed the World. The children have been learning about suffixes such as -ed, -ing, -er, and -est. We have also been working on using adjectives and extending sentences using the conjunction and.

In Maths, we have been focusing on subtraction using a range of methods, including number lines, solving word problems, and using practical strategies like crossing out. We have also practised counting in 2's, 5's and 10's, using splat square to spot patterns.

In Phonics, we have been reviewing all the sounds learned so far to help embed and secure the children’s knowledge.

Well done to everyone for reading regularly at home and practising tricky words. We have really noticed a difference in the children’s confidence—keep up the great work!

Thank you for your continued support.
