We Enjoy and Excel in the Presence of God

Thursday 30th April 2026- Year 1

Good evening,

We are delighted to welcome Miss Price, our student teacher, who will be with us until the end of June.

What a lovely week we’ve had—thankfully accompanied by some beautiful sunshine. The children thoroughly enjoyed practising their sports skills in preparation for Sports Day.

In Phonics, we continue to revisit and consolidate all the sounds taught so far. Please keep up the great work at home by reading little and often, encouraging your child to spot familiar sounds in their books and practise their tricky words.  I have attached some resources (I have shared before) that we use in the classroom to help. This week’s eBooks have now been assigned.

We have now finished our recent text, The Boy Who Sailed the World, which the children greatly enjoyed. Next week, we will begin our new book, The Pirate Cruncher, which I’m sure will be just as exciting. To complement this, we are planning a fun Pirate Day on Friday 22nd May. Children are invited to come to school dressed as a pirate, mermaid, or sea creature. Further details will be sent home tomorrow.

In Maths, we have been learning about place value to 50. This has included counting in 10s, grouping in tens, and partitioning numbers (for example, 34 as 3 tens and 4 ones). Please continue to practise counting in 10s at home, and make use of EdShed to support this week’s learning. I will also attach a fun game to support.

In Geography, we are continuing our topic on beaches and rock pools, thinking about how creatures adapt to their environments. A date for your diary: we will be visiting Lepe Beach on Thursday 11th June. Letters and permission forms will follow shortly.

Finally, a big thank you to the many parent helpers who have supported us this year, we truly appreciate it. If you are interested in helping and can spare an afternoon, please do get in touch. You will need an up-to-date DBS check, which is a quick and straightforward process that we can arrange through the school.

Enjoy the long weekend, and as always, thank you for your continued support.

Kind regards,
Year 1 Team
