Little Wandle – Reading at Home
Little Wandle Parent Resources: https://www.littlewandle.org.uk/resources/for-parents/
We have uploaded the ebooks your child has read this half-term to their online account. Your child’s new password can be found in their reading record.
These books are carefully matched to your child’s reading level, and they should be able to read around 90% of the words independently. If your child gets stuck on a word, simply tell them the word so they can keep reading fluently and enjoy the story.
The Little Wandle Parent Resources page contains lots of useful videos and guidance to help you support your child’s reading at home. We have also attached some class materials for you to use at home, so please feel free to print these out. If you have any questions, please do get in touch.
Practising Tricky Words – Regular practice of tricky words at home is really important in helping your child become a confident, fluent reader. Tricky words are words that children may find difficult to sound out using the phonics they have learnt so far. Some contain unusual spelling patterns, so children need plenty of opportunities to read and recognise them.
There are lots of fun ways to practise at home! You could play word games, spot tricky words in books, use flashcards or simply spend a few minutes practising them together. Little and often is best, and regular practice will help your child recognise these words more quickly, improving their reading fluency and confidence.
So far in Year 1, we have recapped all the tricky words taught in Reception. After half term, we will begin learning the Year 1 tricky words.
You can find a helpful guide on the Little Wandle website to support your child with learning these words. Thank you for your continued support in helping your child develop a love of reading!
