Dear parents and carers,

What a busy and productive week we have had in Year 5!

First of all, thank you so much for all the generous donations for our Harvest Festival. We really appreciate your support. We still have until Wednesday to bring in any further donations, so there is still time to contribute.

In Maths, we have now completed our Place Value unit, including learning about rounding numbers. Although we have finished the unit, we will continue to revisit and practise these skills throughout the year to help the children develop confidence and fluency. Next week, we are moving on to Addition and Subtraction, where the children will apply their mathematical knowledge to a range of calculations and problems.

In Guided Reading, we have finished reading The Travel Book, and the children have developed a much better understanding of non-fiction texts, including how they are structured and the different features they contain. We are now moving on to What a Waste, where we will continue to develop our reading and comprehension skills while exploring an important real-world topic.

In English, we started our exciting new unit based on Hansel and Gretel by Neil Gaiman. This is a dark and atmospheric retelling of the traditional fairy tale, with vivid descriptions and intriguing characters. The children have been making predictions about the story, exploring the characters' emotions and motivations, and thinking carefully about how the settings are described. We are looking forward to seeing where our learning takes us as we explore the text further!

In Science, we have been learning about air resistance. The children worked together to plan an investigation using parachutes, thinking carefully about how we can make a fair test and what variables we might change and measure. We are looking forward to carrying out our investigation and seeing what we discover!

In Art, we have been preparing for our printing project. The children have been practising their designs and working on foam tiles in preparation for creating their prints next week.

A little reminder that the children need to remember their PE kits every day. Please help to ensure that PE kits are in school and ready to use.
