Year 5 Blog

Week beginning 28.10.26
Dear parents and carers,
A huge thank you for the plentiful donations for our Harvest Festival. We were incredibly grateful for your generosity. We all enjoyed taking part in the Harvest Service at church on Wednesday and were very proud to contribute to this special celebration.
In Maths this week, we have been working on addition and subtraction with numbers greater than four digits. We have also been learning how to use rounding to check whether our answers are sensible and accurate. The children have been working hard to apply these skills to a range of calculations and problems.
In English, we have been exploring the WAGOLL (what a good one looks like), looking closely at its language features and text structure. We have been thinking carefully about how authors use language and organise their writing to engage the reader.
We have started reading What a Waste during our Guided Reading sessions. We have been answering comprehension questions and developing our understanding of different text features, thinking carefully about how these help us to find and understand information.
Our Science investigation this week focused on air resistance. We investigated the question: Does the surface area of a parachute affect the time it takes to fall? We carefully considered the different variables involved and carried out our investigation. We observed that the surface area of the parachute does affect the time it takes to fall, helping us to develop our understanding of air resistance.
In Art, we have been exploring mono printing using foam tiles. The children experimented with creating prints and produced some fabulous results! We were particularly impressed by the variety of patterns and designs they created.
Well done, Year 5, for another fantastic week!
