Year 5 Blog

Week beginning 12.10.26

Dear parents and carers,

What a busy and action-packed week we’ve had in Year 5!

In Maths, we began a new unit on multiplication and division, exploring some important mathematical concepts. We investigated multiples, common multiples, factors, common factors and prime numbers. These are all big topics that require plenty of practise and careful thinking, so the children have certainly been putting their brains to work!

With so much new learning to take on board, this week’s homework will be particularly valuable in helping everyone consolidate and embed their understanding. A little extra practice will go a long way!

In English, our lessons have been full of creativity as we wrote, edited and published our own dual narratives, inspired by Neil Gaiman’s version of Hansel and Gretel. The children explored how the same story can be told from different perspectives, thinking carefully about character, atmosphere and storytelling techniques.

We’ve seen some wonderful examples of imaginative writing, with the children creating suspenseful atmospheres and bringing their characters and stories to life. It has been fantastic to see their ideas develop from first drafts through to published pieces!

In Guided Reading, we finished reading What a Waste and put our understanding to the test by answering comprehension questions. The children have been developing their reading comprehension skills, retrieving information from the text and thinking carefully about what they have read.

In PE, we focused on fitness circuits! The children worked hard as they moved around different stations, challenging themselves to improve their stamina, strength and overall fitness. There was plenty of energy and determination on display, and I suspect a few children may have been feeling it in their arms and legs afterwards!

We’ve covered some challenging new concepts in Maths, produced some fantastic writing and worked hard to keep ourselves active and healthy.

Have a lovely weekend, and remember to spend a little time practising those Maths skills to help all that learning really stick!
