Year 1–4.10.24
Good afternoon,
What a fabulous week we’ve had! On Thursday afternoon, we ventured out for a delightful walk around Brockenhurst, where the children practised their map-reading skills while exploring the human and physical geography of our local area. The sun was shining, and we truly enjoyed every moment. A huge thank you to the parents who joined us; we couldn’t have done it without your support!
In Phonics, we’re diving into Phase 5 learning while continuing to recap Phases 2 and 3 from Reception. This week, we focused on some exciting sounds: oy (as in boy), ea (as in sea), ou (as in cloud), and ay (as in play). We can’t wait to share more about our phonics journey at the Phonics Evening next Tuesday, 8th October at 6.30pm. We’ll be handing out our ‘Grow the Codes’ resources, which offers valuable insights into how we teach phonics and tips for supporting your child at home.
In English, we’ve been exploring the -est suffix in our vocabulary. The children are practising using their phonics to write meaningful sentences, and we’re incredibly impressed with their progress in applying Phase 5 phonics!
In Maths, we’re sharpening our skills by using mathematical language to compare groups and numbers. We’re learning terms like more, fewest, and the same, and we’re also using our crocodile symbols to compare two numbers. It’s wonderful to see their confidence grow as they engage with these concepts! I have set some maths and spelling home learning at https://www.edshed.com/en-gb/homework
A big shout-out to all the children who have been reading regularly at home! Remember to read each book at least twice to help develop fluency skills—it makes a significant difference in their reading journey.
Thank you all for your continued support. Wishing you a lovely weekend ahead!
