We Enjoy and Excel in the Presence of God

Year 6 Weekly Blog

7.10.22

Good afternoon,

The children are really getting used to the routines in Year 6 now, taking responsibility for their job roles, helping other children throughout the school.

In Maths, we have moved on to calculating perimeter and area, and applying this to a variety of problems, including a problem where the children had to create a new pen for the school pigs out of 40m of fencing, trying to give the pigs the greatest area possible. The children came up with some interesting shaped pens!

In English, the children have planned and written the next chapter for 'Dead Man's Cove'. Their ideas have been so creative and interesting to read. We will now continue to read the book as our 'Daily Read' to find out what really happens in the upcoming chapters.

In History, our topic on 'The Trojan Horse' has continued and the children are enjoying exploring different pieces of evidence to decide whether the story is a fact, legend or a myth. Our Science topic on Space also continues.

The children have been engaged in their learning and were particularly engaged this afternoon, where we had our second visit from a business in the local community: Cycle Experience. The children listened to Ross talk about his business and how it has developed over time, and then they were set the challenge to put bikes together, being given the parts and tools required. They definitely lived up to the challenge!

Just a reminder about expectations of homework:

- Maths Shed set on a Monday and due to be completed the following Monday

-Spelling Shed set on a Monday and due to be completed the following Monday

- Children to read daily. They have books from the reading scheme and library books to take home. They also have access to a range of high quality Year 6 texts which we have in our classroom and they can take these home too. Please note, their reading records now stay in school as we are encouraging the children to use these as a tool to review the book they are reading, and to record when they have read with an adult in school.

- Multiplication tables to be practised. Some children have been sent home with one multiplication table that they need to work on, and they should be practising this at home. We review these in school to see how they are progressing.

We hope you all have a great weekend.
